| One of England's
"new generation" of quality pipe makers. L. & J.S. Briars is really a
pseudonym for Les and Dolly Wood, a husband and wife team who produce a
wide spectrum of pipes, most of which are exported to America. Although
they make numerous private label pipes for Europe, their premium product
is the Ferndown pipe (which gets its name from Wood's house), an
oil-cured high grade made from Grecian plateau. About 90% of the
Ferndowns ( which are marketed in Germany under the name Ellwood-for L
Wood-get it?) are made in rusticated "Bark" finish and the balance are a
smooth "Root" finish. Especially unusual is the fact that a full 50% of
all Ferndowns pipes are mounted in silver or gold. The reason for all
this precious metallurgy is that Les Wood is England's premier silver
mounter of briar pipes and is the only pipe maker in Britain with engine
turning/mounting facilities in his workshop. The Ferndown pipe came into
existence in 1983 when Wood left Alfred Dunhill Ltd. to try his hand at
creating his own brand. Approximately 1,500 are produced annually, with
about 80% of these going to the U.S. trade, where the sparkle of silver
combined with superb smoking qualities have made the Ferndown very much
in demand. One of only a handful of pipes made today using an oil-curing
process, the Ferndown pipe offers a cool, smooth smoke with an extremely
easy break-in period. Crafted primarily in the traditional shapes, the
Ferndown has achieved a level of prominence and customer loyalty that
few others can compare to. Click on the pipe thumbnail for a larger view. |
